Carbonia - Carbonia Iglesias (CI)

The town of Carbonia with a population of 30.000 is located in the south-western part of Sardinia and belongs to the Province of Carbonia-Iglesias. The capital of Sardinia, Cagliari, is approx. 70 km away.

Carbonia is a relatively "young" city and was inaugurated in 1938 by B. Mussolini. The name of Carbonia refers to the Italian word of coal, which was abundant in this region, and Carbonia was one of the main mining centres of Sardinia. Since the mine´s closing in the 1970s the town has to deal with a high unemployment rate.

Some of the mines like the Serbariu coalmine were turned into museums and can be visited nowadays with guided tours.

Another place to go is Monte Sirai, an hill nearby Carbonia that hosts the ruins of a Phoenician-Punic settlement.

Worth a visit are the long sandy beach of Porto Paglia and the islands of San Pietro and San Antioco.

A winding and panoramic coast road in the north-west of carbonia connects the communitx of Gonnesa with Masua in the north. From here one can admire the beautiful and white rockformation Sugarloaf of Nebida (Pan di Zucchero) which emerges out of the sea.
